Otto Bock founds foreign branch in South Africa

The global medical equipment company Otto Bock HealthCare has founded a new sales and service company in South Africa effective July 1. Now the German global market leader with its headquarters in Duderstadt, South Lower Saxony is represented with locations in 44 countries.
The new company OTTO BOCK SOUTH AFRICA (PTY) LTD in Midrand, between the economic centre of Johannesburg and the capital Pretoria, makes possible the direct sale of Otto Bock products in addition to offering optimum customer technical support. In this context, a Competence Centre has also been set up on the company premises, providing training and continuing education for technicians as well as premium fittings for customers.
In order to offer optimum service for customers and patients alike, the comprehensive service and product portfolio ranges from conventional devices to high-tech prostheses. Otto Bock intends to establish fitting standards in the South African market, and to work with local customers in order to improve the reimbursement system over the long term. Numerous positive responses from all over the country, even in the first few days after the company opened its doors, confirm that Otto Bock is on the right track.
South Africa is among the emerging nations on the African continent, and has experienced rapid development over the last few years. It has a modern infrastructure, plentiful natural resources and, for example, well developed finance, energy and transport sectors. Demand for medical technology has increased tremendously due to an aging population and widespread diseases such as diabetes. "We simultaneously need to continue developing and qualifying the reimbursement system in South Africa," says Karl Heinz Burghardt, Regional President of the Otto Bock region Eastern Europe/Middle East/Africa (EEMEA). The country is grappling with major social and economic challenges; the high rate of HIV infections is particularly detrimental.
"Participating in this market with our own infrastructure allows us to respond to specific local needs directly and quickly in the future," says Karl Heinz Burghardt, who has founded 16 foreign branches together with his team. The internationalisation of the company Otto Bock began in the USA in 1958 and has continued ever since.
